C’est lui

Elsa Justel

Programme notes
Tribute to Francis Dhomont

Francis Dhomont’s remarkable style provides us with a form template that includes very meaningful gestures. His palette moves with surprising ease through various states of colours, textures and personalities. With Dhomont, everything makes sense and is indissociable: time is tied to space as much as to dynamics and materials.

In Francis Dhomont’s music, one often finds an underpinning program with sonic and spatial elements that contribute extra-musical meaning. The titles of his works suggest metaphors associated with pictorial dimensions, psychological dimensions, etc. This aspect of his work often produces the kind of emotional impact one rarely feels in electroacoustic music. One example is Sous le regard d’un soleil noir (1979-81, 83), from which I borrowed a handful of images to put together this piece.
