Over the Edge

John Oliver

Programme notes

Off the Edge was created in 1992 using three sound generating boxes controlled by an Atari computer running C-Lab Notator software. The three instruments were the Akai S-1000, TG77, and EMU Proteus/1. Over the Edge was commissioned by composer Paul Dolden for his presentation that year of a concert carte blanche. One can hear in the original work my interest in highly dense sounds. But at the time I was not satisfied with the slow working method and lack of dynamic possibilities offered by granular synthesis (mainly due to insufficient speed of computers). Over the Edge is a remix/granulation of the original that layers various new pathways through the original work.
