Nicolas Bernier

Nicolas Bernier’s work is rooted in sound. The core of his research lies, more specifically, in an inquiry into the performativity of electronic sound—a practice informed by dialogues with visual arts, dance, literature, photography, moving images, design, and theatre. Amid this eclecticism, one constant remains: the search for a balance between the intellectual and the sensuality, as well as between organic materials and digital processing.

His work earned him a Golden Nica Prize at the 2013 Prix Ars Electronica (Austria), one of the highest honors in the field of digital arts. His works have garnered attention at major events such as SONAR (Spain), Mutek (Québec), DotMov Festival (Japan), ZKM (Germany), and Transmediale (Germany), and are available on several labels including LINE (USA), leerraum (Switzerland), and Entr’acte (UK).

He holds a PhD from the University of Huddersfield (UK) and is a professor in the Digital Music Department at the Université de Montréal. He is a member of the CIRMMT and Hexagram centers and co-founded Laboratoire formes • ondes at the Université de Montréal.
